Short writeup:

The 2023 Serangoon Gardens Secondary School A Math Paper 1 stands out as a strong contender for my favorite A Math paper from the 2023 batch. It strikes a perfect balance between staying relevant to the O-level syllabus and introducing subtle twists in nearly every question without making the paper excessively difficult.

At first glance, the questions align with what students typically expect in an O-level A Math paper, focusing on the required technical skills. However, the phrasing and twists in the questions add a layer of insightfulness, challenging students to comprehend the questions fully before answering. This paper trains students to navigate less direct questions and understand the context before solving them.

Despite the added complexity, the paper remains approachable for most students. For many, this paper will feel both familiar and refreshingly different. The questions may require an extra moment of thought, but they are ultimately solvable with a clear understanding of the problem. Even the technically straightforward questions are presented in their most insightful form from each chapter.

Overall, this paper is exceptional. If someone removed the cover and claimed it was an actual O-level paper, I wouldn’t be surprised. It closely models what I expect the actual O-level A Math paper to look like, and I wouldn’t be shocked if Cambridge set their paper similarly. I highly recommend all students try this paper under exam conditions and consider saving it for their final timed practice before the O-level A Math exam.
