Short writeup:
The 2021 Anderson Secondary School A Math Paper 1 stands out as one of the most challenging A Math papers I've encountered. At first glance, the questions seem unfamiliar, making students struggle to find similarities with what they've practiced in school. Within the first few minutes of the paper, students will likely feel intimidated.
Typically, unfamiliar questions can be insightful, offering new learning points that aren't usually covered during regular practice. However, this paper deviates from that norm. The unusual questions in this paper are simply unusual and don't provide significant value for an O-level student. The skills required for these questions are conceptually soft and not very useful for exam preparation, making them less insightful.
Interestingly, questions that are usually considered difficult in other prelim papers appear easier in this one. The calculus questions, for instance, are straightforward but require an extra step to solve, making them more tedious than difficult.
Overall, this paper seems designed to strike fear into students and remind them of the challenges A Math papers can pose. It serves as a strong motivation for those who are procrastinating on their revision. This paper tests both a student's abilities and their mental fortitude, making it particularly useful for students who need a wake-up call about the rigors of the O levels.
